Rocks
possibly the best sports manga i've read ever. passionate, thrilling, fully immersive.
art: 100/10
i've never seen art that's so expressive, so visually compelling, so capable of portraying emotion. panel composition, the depiction of the sport, the emotions. THE EMOTIONS. the thrill, the struggle, the despair. it's insane. you hold your breath at every jump, throw your hands up every time she lands an impossible move.
characters: 20/10
well-written. HEAVY character development, both for the coach and our main character. it's literally crazy witnessing inori go from gathering worms to attend the rink to LANDING DOUBLE QUADS.
each character feels deeply fleshed out. it's focused mainly on her ability to challenge and overcome. inori goes through so much, but she still ends up on top, and that is a journey you SERIOUSLY don't want to miss.
our other main character, Inori's coach, goes through an equally taxing journey. he's an ice dancer, not a figure skater, which failed him during his years in the competitive rink-- but his keen eye, his knowledge, and his grace is what makes you fall in love with him. (he's hella buff too, for those who loveee muscular men)
i love all of these characters. each of them have their own identifiable traits that set them apart-- the side characters are MEMORABLE. their personalities are exaggerated, but it doesn't diminish the reality of the world we are thrown into.
story: 100/10
think about blue lock's dog-eat-dog competition. think about haikyu's enthralling underdog journey. medalist is CRIMINALLY underrated. inori is this little girl who ADORES skating. she goes from someone who barely knows the basics, to a girl who is able to fully compete on the national level. the introduction and comprehensive breakdown of figureskating is easy and well-timed.
enjoyment: 1000/10
Medalist engraves itself into your brain. i binged it all around two weeks ago, but the entire story is still fresh in my brain. everybody NEEDS to read this manga.
